Using creams with HappySkin

Keep using any emollient or steroid cream your GP has prescribed. Don't stop or change it on our advice. Thick or paraffin based creams sit on the surface of the fabric and stop it working, so apply a thin layer of a non-paraffin moisturiser and let it absorb before dressing. If you are unsure how to time a prescribed steroid around wear, ask your GP.

Fabric and washing

White only, with no dyes. Ready to wear straight from the box. Wash at 30 to 40°C, tumble dry low or medium, do not bleach or dry clean. Some bobbling after washing is normal with this soft fabric and does not affect how it works.

“My toddler managed to keep them on a couple of times in a row for sleep and that's great it means no scratching his hands and he can only rub his head. He was happy to put them on as soon as we got them so that was good. The eczema on his hands can be pretty …”

“Gloves are a good fit (10 yr old) and stay on (unlike standard cotton gloves) with their depth of wrist, soft and comfortable.”

“These aren't worn as much as the neck wrap, but still help to soothe the skin on the back of her hands and around her wrists. They help minimise the scratching damage too and she's happy to wear them at school.”

“These started off well but after washing on a gentle cycle only once they developed “Bally” fabric pieces on them and became prone to rippping. My 5 year old easily ripped in the the fingers during the night and they were no longer soft on her skin. The fabri…”

“Seem to have a positive effect, but the gloves are not very durable for everyday wear.”

“These have been a life saver for over night. My daughter would wake crying in the night because she was so itchy but the gloves have made a massive difference. They have also helped her to stop picking over night.”

The technology

How the DreamSkin coating works

Every HappySkin garment is soft cotton and TENCEL with a coating of the DreamSkin polymer. The same polymer, at a higher level, is used in DreamSkin silk garments available on NHS prescription.

  • Happy Skin drawing: the fabric lifting off the skin, with arrows circling moisture between them

    Manages moisture

Holds and releases moisture at the skin, so it isn’t left too dry or too damp.

  • Happy Skin drawing: the fabric lifting off the skin, with warm arrows rising out through it

    Regulates temperature

Lets the body heat and cool as it needs to, so they stay comfortable at night.

  • Doesn’t wash out. Bonded to the fabric, so it washes at 30 to 40°C with everything else.
  • Works from the box. No need to wash it first.
How to use it

Getting the best from HappySkin

  • Keep creams thin

The coating has to touch the skin to work, and thick creams or ointments block it. Use a thin layer of a non-paraffin moisturiser and let it dry completely before dressing.

  • Choose a snug fit

Snug but not too tight, so the coating stays in contact with the skin. Check the size guide

  • Wear it as much as you need

Day and night, up to 24 hours a day if needed, under their normal clothes or as nightwear.

Keep using anything your GP has prescribed.

Don't stop or change an emollient or steroid cream on our advice. If you are unsure how to time a steroid around wear, ask your GP.

Questions

About these gloves

What are eczema gloves used for?

Eczema gloves gently cover your child’s hands to help stop scratching and protect the skin during a flare-up. By reducing scratching and nail damage, they give sore, itchy skin the chance to calm and recover. They can be worn on their own or layered over cream.

Can my child wear eczema gloves at night?

Yes. The gloves are light and breathable, so they are comfortable to wear overnight when itching is often at its worst. Many parents use them at bedtime to help protect the skin and support more settled sleep.

Can I put the gloves on over eczema cream?

Yes. You can layer the gloves over the non-paraffin creams. The soft fabric helps keep the cream against the skin while still letting the skin breathe.

How do I choose the right size for my child?

Check the age guide on this page and measure your child’s hand if they are between sizes. A comfortable fit that is not too tight lets skin breathe and stay comfortable all day and night.
