As we’re coming to the end of summer, it’s likely that, as a parent of a child with eczema or sensitive skin condition, you’re concerned about their skin becoming drier as we enter the colder months.

The dry, cold air that comes with autumn and winter can seriously aggravate your child’s eczema – and getting on top of it early is key.

We’ll discuss some of the concerns you may have about your baby’s dry skin, and the best ways to treat the problem.

Treating baby’s chapped lips

Babies suffer with chapped lips in the winter more than most adults. Since their lips are constantly wet due to drooling, this can cause the skin around their mouth and chin to become cracked and irritated.

To help with your baby’s chapped lips, use a gentle lip balm that’s safe for children.  This one from Burt’s Bees is our favourite. It’s made with only natural ingredients and is suitable for all ages.

If you happen to be breastfeeding your baby, try applying some breast milk to the affected area. Breast milk can clear up several of your baby’s dry skin issues, including chapped lips and mild nappy rash.

How to treat baby’s dry skin on cheeks

There’s nothing cuter than a baby with rosy cheeks, but all that dry winter air can cause their skin to become a little more than rosy!  Your baby’s cheeks may appear to be red, irritated, and sometimes even flaky.

If you’re going to be outside a lot with your baby during harsh weather, consider investing in a plastic cover for your pram or buggy. This will shelter your baby from the worst of the weather. Choose one with secure fastenings, as the most determined toddlers are likely to kick it off repeatedly otherwise!

Lanolin is a great choice for keeping those chubby cheeks protected in the wind and rain. It’s safe for use on babies (and is a lifesaver for cracked nipples if you’re breastfeeding!). We recommend this lanolin cream from Lansinoh. Whilst it does say it’s for nipples, it’s also great for your baby’s dry skin, particularly their cheeks!

Protecting your baby’s dry skin and eczema in cold weather

If your baby has eczema, you’ll need to take extra care to protect their skin in the colder months.

There are many baby skin care products on the market, and choosing the right one can seem overwhelming.

Here are a few tips to help you navigate the maze of skin care products for babies:

  • Check the ingredients. Avoid anything containing perfume or alcohol.
  • If your baby has eczema, avoid products containing soap. Soap-free cleansers are less drying, and less likely to cause irritation.
  • Don’t use anything on your baby that contains detergents or deodorants.
  • If your baby is under 6 months, don’t use products with sunscreen – just keep them out of direct sunlight.
  • If your baby is over 6 months, always use a sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher – but it’s still best to limit time spent in the sun.
  • If your baby has very dry patches of skin, creams or ointments tend to be thicker than lotions and are therefore more helpful. Don’t hesitate to contact your doctor for advice.
  • Dress your baby in eczema HappySkin clothing.

This last point is particularly important. If your child has dry, inflamed, or irritated skin, the best thing you can do to improve their skin and make them feel comfortable is to dress them in our soft Tencel Cotton clothing that’s been engineered with DreamSkin technology specifically for babies or children with eczema.

Try our eczema clothing for your little one’s skin
